The unix xterm command supports a wide variety of behaviours. Some telnet clients like Putty, attempt to emulate these behaviours, but most MUD clients implement very few of them.

256 Colour Mode

One aspect of the xterm functionality which MUD clients often support, is displaying 256 colours using xterm's escape codes.
